Windermere is Twinned With: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Deriving its name from England's biggest lake, the small town of Windermere is approximately half a mile from the edge of the lake, not coming in contact with it like its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" would seem to be a combination of Old English and Old Swedish, the first written reference to it from the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the 1st bit of the name is assumed to have been a personal name Vinandr (from Old Swedish), with the 2nd element "mere", meaning a lake or pool (Old English). Although the town itself would not have that name until centuries later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it is these days almost entirely grew right after the arrival of the railway in the 1840's, the early village was called Birthwaite and it acquired the name "Windermere" subsequent to the railway company named the station after the famous lake rather than the village. So essentially the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were the people accountable for giving the town its name!

The town as we speak has just about merged with neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, even if they remain as 2 different towns with individual centres. The region is colossal for tourism and you can find a variety of museums and visitor attractions, with the lake itself continuing to be largest attraction. It has a population of approximately 8,000 occupants and it is located in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: With a depth of up to 219 feet (sixty six metres), widths close to 1 mile and a length of approximately 11 miles (eighteen kilometers), Windermere is England's greatest inland lake. Since the eighteen forty seven coming of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has become an enormous tourism magnet, with more than 15 million tourists every year coming to the Lake District National Park in total. It is well known for boat trips, angling, photography, water activities & walking. The lake is a ribbon lake which was moulded during the last Ice Age, it's got 18 isles in total the largest sized being known as Belle Isle.
