Lying close to and deriving its name from the greatest inland lake in England, the small town of Windermere doesn't actually touch the banks of the lake, as it is roughly one kilometer away, though its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" is thought to be a blend of Old Swedish and Old English, the first listed mention of it in 1396 as "Wynandermer", the very first component of the name is understood to refer to a personal name Vinandr (from Old Swedish), and the next component "mere", that means a pool or lake (from Old English). Although the village didn't go under that name until hundreds of years later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town of Windermere as it stands today almost entirely developed after the arriving of the train line in the eighteen forties, the actual village was called Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" once the railway company named the station after the famous lake rather than the village. Which means that effectively the Kendal and Windermere Railway were responsible for naming the town!

The town and parish nowadays has a population of about 8,245 and it's found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area, the town has actually become amalgamated with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, whilst they are still two unique towns having their own centers. The location is immense for tourism with a range of sights and museums, with the famous lake proving main attraction.

Lake Windermere: Created during the last Ice Age, Lake Windermere holds the title of the biggest inland lake in England having a length of around 11 mls (18km) a width of about one mile & a depth of up to two hundred & nineteen feet (66 m), it's a ribbon lake and it's inside Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven construction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has remained a massive tourist draw, with in excess of fifteen million people every year staying in the Lake District Park overall.
