The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Standing close to and deriving its name from the biggest inland lake in England, the town of Windermere doesn't actually touch the edge of the lake, being approximately a half a mile away, whereas its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere actually does.

The first written reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in 1396, and looks to be a blend of dialects, with the first element Old Swedish (from the personal name Vinandr) and the following element "mere" deriving from the Old English for pool or lake. The village wouldn't however have been called this at that time, merely the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadAstonishing as it might sound, the Kendal and Windermere Railway were primarily responsible for affording the town its name, as it was earlier a village named Birthwaite, after the train line arrived at this place in the eighteen forties, the train company decided they would name it after the lake rather than that of the village itself, and therefore it became known as "Windermere".

The town and parish these days has a population of about 8,200 and is found in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria, the town has fundamentally become combined with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, even if they survive as two different towns having separate town centres. The area is fantastic for the travel industry and there are a mixture of museums and points of interest, with the renowned lake itself continuing to be principal draw.

Lake Windermere: Fashioned at the time of Ice Age, Windermere holds the title of the largest sized natural lake in England with a length of over 11 miles (18 kilometers) a width of close to a mile and depths of up to two hundred and nineteen feet (sixty six m), its known as a ribbon lake & it is within Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven coming of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it's been a huge tourist attraction, with over fifteen million people a year visiting the Lake District as a whole.
