The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Deriving its name from England's biggest lake, the small town of Windermere is about one kilometre distant from the edge of the lake, not touching it like its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The earliest recorded mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late fourteenth century, and is believed to be a fusion of dialects, with the first component Old Swedish (Vinandr, a personal name) and the second part "mere" coming from the Old English for lake or pool. The town itself wouldn't however have been known as this at that time, only the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe pre-existing village of Birthwaite only evolved into "Windermere" in the 1840's following the arriving of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the owners deciding to name the train station after the legendary lake as opposed to giving it the name of the village itself, and so actually the train company afforded the town its name!

Located in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, the town has a population of about 8,000, The region is enormous for travel and leisure with quite a number of places of interest and museums, with Lake Windermere itself appearing chief attraction. Windermere town has just about merged with the nearby Bowness-on-Windermere, even though they are still two different towns boasting independent centres.

Lake Windermere: With a depth of up to two hundred & nineteen foot (66 meters), widths around 1 mile and a length of over 11 miles (eighteen km's), Lake Windermere is England's largest sized inland lake. Since the 1847 building of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has become a significant visitor attraction, with in excess of 15 million people a year visiting the Lake District Park as a whole. It is a favorite for boat trips, fishing, photography, swimming & hiking. The lake is a ribbon lake that was moulded in the Ice Age, it boasts 18 isles in total the largest being known as Belle Isle.
