Located very close to and deriving its name from the biggest freshwater lake in England, the town of Windermere doesn't literally touch the lake, being about one kilometre away, though its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere certainly does.

The very first reported mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late fourteenth century, and is reckoned to be a mixture of languages, the 1st component Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the second part "mere" being the Old English for pool or lake. The village wouldn't however have been called this back then, only the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadBizarre as it seems, the Kendal and Windermere Railway were primarily responsible for giving the town its name, as it was earlier a settlement named Birthwaite, at the time the railway came to this spot in the 1840's, the train company thought they would name it after the celebrated lake and not that of the existing village itself, and subsequently it became "Windermere".
