The little town of Windermere is perched approximately a half a mile from England's greatest lake, from which the town gets its name, none of this town touches the shore of the lake, while the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a mixture of Old English and Old Swedish, the 1st reported mention of it from the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the first element of the name is understood to have been a personal name Vinandr (Old Swedish), with the next part "mere", signifying a pool or lake (from the Old English). Though the town itself didn't have that name until centuries later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it stands these days only evolved since the arrival of the train in in eighteen forty seven, the actual village was known as Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" once the railway company named the railway station after the lake instead of the village. Therefore actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were answerable for giving the town its name!

Windermere town and parish as we speak has a population of approximately 8,200 and is found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland District, the present day town has practically combined with the nearby Bowness-on-Windermere, although they survive as 2 unique towns having individual town centres. The area is huge for travel and leisure with quite a number of interesting attractions and museums, with the famous lake proving greatest attraction.

Lake Windermere: Formed over the last Ice Age, Windermere holds the title of the largest sized natural lake in England having a length of roughly eleven mls (18 kilometers) a width of roughly one mile & a depth of up to two hundred and nineteen foot (sixty six metres), it is a ribbon lake & is inside Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the eighteen forty seven arrival of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has remained a massive tourist draw, with more than 15 million visitors per year visiting the Lake District National Park overall.
