Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The tiny town of Windermere is located about a half a mile from the edge of the largest lake in England, from which it gets its name, no part of it actually touches the banks of the lake, whilst its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" is supposedly a combination of Old English and Old Swedish, the 1st documented reference to it being in the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the very first section of the name is thought to refer to a personal name Vinandr (Old Swedish), with the second section "mere", signifying a lake or pool (from Old English). Even though the town wouldn't be called this name until the mid-nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it stands today almost entirely started after the coming of the train line in the eighteen forties, the early village was named Birthwaite and it modified its name to "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the station after the lake as opposed to the village. Which means essentially the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were answerable for naming the town!

Located in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area, the town has a population of roughly 8,000 inhabitants, the area is fantastic for the holiday industry and you can find many places of interest and museums, with Lake Windermere by itself proving largest draw. Windermere town has literally amalgamated with the nearby Bowness-on-Windermere, though they are still 2 distinct towns with independent centers.

Lake Windermere: With depths reaching 219 foot (66 metres), widths nearly one mile & a length of approximately eleven miles (18 km's), Windermere is England's greatest freshwater lake. Since the 1847 construction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has become a popular visitor draw, with in excess of fifteen million people each year heading to the Lake District Park overall. It's favored for boat trips, fishing, birdwatching, water activities & camping. The lake is a ribbon lake that was made in the course of Ice Age, it has 18 islands in total the largest called Belle Isle.
