Getting its name from England's largest freshwater lake, the little town of Windermere is roughly half a mile distance from the edge of the lake, not touching it as does its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" is believed to be a blend of Old Swedish and Old English, the earliest written mention of it from the late 14th century as "Wynandermer", the 1st element of the name is assumed to have been a personal name Vinandr (from Old Swedish), and the 2nd part "mere", signifying a lake or pool (from the Old English). Though the town wouldn't use that name until the 19th century.

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it appears today only began after the appearance of the train in the 1840's, the actual village was called Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" subsequent to the railway company named the train station after the lake rather than that of the village. Thus effectively the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were responsible for naming the town!

Windermere town and parish at present has got a populace of about 8,000 inhabitants and it's located in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria, the town has essentially become merged with neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, although they survive as two unique towns boasting different centers. The area is enormous for the tourism industry and there are quite a number of points of interest and museums, with Lake Windermere by itself continuing to be number one draw.

Lake Windermere: Created in the Ice Age, Windermere stands proud as the biggest freshwater lake in England with a length of roughly 11.2 miles (18 km's) a width of approximately one mile & depths of up to two hundred and nineteen foot (66 metres), its in the formation of a ribbon lake and it's in Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven arrival of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has been an enormous visitor magnet, with more than fifteen million people every year venturing to the Lake District Park in total.
