Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The little town of Windermere can be found roughly one kilometer from the banks of England's largest lake, and from which the town got its name, none of this town touches the lake, whilst its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere has banks on the lake.

Whilst not the name of the town back then (simply the lake), the first listed mention of it appears to be as "Wynandermer" in 1396, with a portion of the name being regarded to be from the Old Swedish (the personal name Vinandr), and the following section coming from the Old English for pool or lake ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it stands today only began after the arrival of the railway line in the eighteen forties, the old settlement was known as Birthwaite and it swapped its name to "Windermere" after the railway company named the station after the lake rather than the village. And so essentially the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were responsible for affording the town its name!

The town and parish presently has got a population of approximately eight thousand and it's located in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, the town today has practically become merged with nearby Bowness, although they remain as two defined towns boasting distinct town centres. The location is fantastic for the travel industry and you can find many sights and museums, with the renowned lake by itself remaining most popular attraction.

Lake Windermere: Made throughout the last Ice Age, Lake Windermere stands proud as the largest natural lake in England with a length of more than 11.2 mls (18km) a width of up to one mile & depths of up to 219 foot (sixty six meters), its known as a ribbon lake and is in Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the 1847 construction of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has remained a tremendous tourism draw, with more than 15 million people each year heading to the Lake District Park as a whole.
