Being named after England's greatest freshwater lake, the tiny town of Windermere is close to one kilometre from the lake's edge, not coming in contact with it as does the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a blend of Old Swedish and Old English, the earliest written mention of it being in 1396 as "Wynandermer", the 1st element of the name is considered to have been a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), with the following component "mere", signifying a pool or lake (from the Old English). Although the village would not have this name until the nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadThe pre-existing settlement of Birthwaite only evolved into "Windermere" in the eighteen forties soon after the appearance of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the executive favouring to name the railway station after the lake as opposed to naming it after the village, so essentially the train company gave the town its name!

The town as we speak has almost combined with the neighbouring Bowness, although they remain as two unique towns with individual centres. The vicinity is enormous for the tourism industry with a mixture of museums and sights, with Lake Windermere itself remaining primary draw. It has a populace of approximately 8,245 and it is found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area.

Lake Windermere: With depths reaching 219 foot (66 meters), widths roughly one mile and a length of approximately 11.2 miles (18 km's), Windermere is England's largest freshwater lake. It is a favorite for yachting, course fishing, photography, water activities & backpacking.
