The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Getting its name from England's biggest freshwater lake, the small town of Windermere is close to half a mile distant from the edge of the lake, not reaching it like its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a mixture of Old English and Old Swedish, the first reported reference to it from 1396 as "Wynandermer", the first portion of the name is considered to refer to a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), with the following section "mere", signifying a pool or lake (Old English). Although the town itself wouldn't have this name until the mid-nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it stands these days almost entirely grew up since the appearance of the train line in the 1840's, the early settlement was called Birthwaite and it changed its name to "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the railway station after the famous lake and not that of the village. And so actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for naming the town!

Located in the Cumbrian South Lakeland District, the town has a population of roughly eight thousand, the location is colossal for the tourism industry and you can find an assortment of museums and points of interest, with the lake itself continuing to be leading attraction. Windermere town has almost joined with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, although they continue to be 2 distinct towns with different centers.
