The little town of Windermere is approximately one kilometre from the edge of England's biggest lake, from where it gets its name, no area of this town actually touches the shore of the lake, however its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

Whilst not the title of the village at that time (only the lake), the 1st recorded mention of it was initially as "Wynandermer" in the late fourteenth century, with a section of it being deemed to be from the Old Swedish (a persons name Vinandr), and the 2nd component deriving from the Old English for lake or pool ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadThe original village of Birthwaite only started to be "Windermere" in the eighteen forties after the appearance of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the executive favouring to name the train station after the lake rather than giving it the name of the village itself, thus effectively the railway company gave the town its title!

The town at present has largely joined with neighbouring Bowness, even though they remain as 2 defined towns with different centres. The area is awesome for leisure and travel and you will find quite a number of museums and points of interest, with the lake proving principal draw. It has a population of approximately 8,000 inhabitants and it's located in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: With depths of up to two hundred & nineteen feet (sixty six m), widths about one mile and a length of more than 11.2 miles (eighteen kilometres), Windermere is England's biggest freshwater lake. Since the eighteen forty seven building of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it's been a massive tourist draw, with more than fifteen million visitors each year visiting the Lake District National Park as a whole. It's favored for boating, freshwater angling, wildlife, water sports and backpacking. The lake is a ribbon lake which was formed in the Ice Age, it boasts 18 islands in total the largest sized being named Belle Isle.
