The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Getting its name from England's biggest lake, the small town of Windermere is close to half a mile distant from the edge of the lake, certainly not touching it as does the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The first listed reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and seems to be a mix of dialects, the first component Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the second part "mere" referring to the Old English for lake or pool. The town would not however have been called this in those days, merely the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadOdd as it might seem, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were mainly responsible for naming the town, since it was previously a village named Birthwaite, at the time the railway line came to this site in in eighteen forty seven, the company decided to call it after the lake rather than the existing village itself, and as a result it was called "Windermere".

The town and parish today has a population of around 8,000 and is found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland District, the present town has literally become merged with the nearby Bowness, though they remain as two different towns having individual centres. The area is fantastic for the tourism industry and there are an array of museums and sightseeing attractions, with the renowned lake by itself being the major draw.

Lake Windermere: With depths reaching 219 foot (66 meters), widths around one mile & a length of around 11.2 miles (18km), Lake Windermere is England's greatest natural lake. Since the eighteen forty seven coming of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has been a massive tourism attraction, with in excess of 15 million people each year heading to the Lake District Park overall. It's favored for boat trips, angling, photography, water sports & backpacking. The lake is a ribbon lake which was made in the course of Ice Age, it's got 18 islands in total the biggest named Belle Isle.
