Deriving its name from England's greatest inland lake, the small town of Windermere is round about one kilometre distance from the the banks of the lake, not coming in contact with it like its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The very first recorded mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and appears to be a mix of tongues, with the 1st element Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the 2nd component "mere" from the Old English for pool or lake. The town itself wouldn't however have been termed this during this period, simply the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it is nowadays mainly developed following the introduction of the railway in the eighteen forties, the original settlement was known as Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" subsequent to the railway company named the train station after the lake and not the village. Thus effectively the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were responsible for naming the town!

The town currently has essentially merged with the adjoining Bowness-on-Windermere, although they remain as 2 different towns having separate centers. The location is serious for travel and leisure and you will find many attractions and museums, with the lake appearing largest draw. It has a populace of around eight thousand and it is set in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: Moulded throughout the last Ice Age, Windermere holds the title of the largest sized inland lake in England having a length of about eleven mls (18km) a width of about a mile & a depth of up to 219 feet (sixty six meters), it is a ribbon lake and is inside of Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the eighteen forty seven coming of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has been a massive tourism draw, with in excess of fifteen million people per year staying in the Lake District in total.
