The smallish town of Windermere is nestled approximately one kilometer from the edge of England's greatest lake, and from where the town gets its name, none of it touches the banks of the lake, whilst the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere certainly does.

Although not the title of the town back then (solely the lake), the earliest listed mention of it had been as "Wynandermer" in the late 14th century, with a part of the name being deemed to be from the Old Swedish (the personal name Vinandr), and the second part from the Old English for pool or lake ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadThe town of Windermere as it stands these days almost entirely grew up since the arriving of the railway line in in eighteen forty seven, the actual village was named Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the railway station after the famous lake and not that of the village. Which means actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway were the people responsible for naming the town!

The town and parish presently has got a populace of around 8,245 and it is situated in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria, the present day town has essentially merged with nearby Bowness-on-Windermere, however they are still 2 different towns with distinct centres. The location is enormous for leisure and travel with a mixture of tourist attractions and museums, with the lake by itself staying number one attraction.
