Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Being named after England's largest freshwater lake, the tiny town of Windermere is roughly one kilometre distant from the edge of the lake, certainly not coming in contact with it like its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

While not the title of the town at this point (merely the lake), the 1st documented mention of it was initially as "Wynandermer" in the late fourteenth century, with a portion of it being thought to be from the Old Swedish (the personal name Vinandr), and the following element coming from the Old English for lake or pool ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it stands nowadays only grew after the coming of the train in 1847, the early settlement was named Birthwaite and it changed its name to "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the station after the lake rather than the village. Which means that actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway were the people responsible for giving the town its name!

Situated in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria, the town has got a population of about 8,200, the location is huge for the travel industry and there are a variety of museums and attractions, with the celebrated lake by itself staying number one attraction. Windermere town has fundamentally become joined with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, however they survive as two defined towns with individual town centres.

Lake Windermere: Molded in the Ice Age, Windermere is the greatest inland lake in England having a length of roughly eleven miles (18km) a width of nearly one mile & depths of up to 219 foot (sixty six metres), it's a ribbon lake and it's inside Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the 1847 arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has become a big tourism attraction, with more than fifteen million visitors per year staying in the Lake District Park in total.
