Sitting in close proximity to and being named after the largest freshwater lake in England, the little town of Windermere doesn't in fact border the lake, being about one kilometer away, though its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere indeed does.

The first reported mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late fourteenth century, and is thought to be a combination of dialects, the 1st section Old Swedish (Vinandr, a personal name) and the second section "mere" deriving from the Old English for lake or pool. The village wouldn't nevertheless have been known as this in those far off days, just the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadAstonishing as it may sound, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were mainly accountable for affording the town its name, as it was beforehand a settlement known as Birthwaite, when the rail service found its way to the area in the 1840's, the company decided to name it after the well known lake instead of the existing village itself, and therefore it was called "Windermere".

The town currently has virtually merged with the nearby Bowness, though they continue to be two different towns having separate centres. The location is serious for the holiday industry and you can find a variety of visitor attractions and museums, with the renowned lake being the biggest draw. It has got a population of about 8,000 and it's found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria.
