Windermere is Twinned With: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Being named after England's greatest freshwater lake, the little town of Windermere is roughly one kilometre distance from the edge of the lake, not touching it like the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" is supposedly a fusion of Old English and Old Swedish, the first written mention of it being in the late 14th century as "Wynandermer", the first part of the name is assumed to be a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), with the following element "mere", meaning a pool or lake (Old English). Though the village would not go under this name until much later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe established settlement of Birthwaite only became "Windermere" in in eighteen forty seven with the introduction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, the owners favouring to call the station after the renowned lake as opposed to naming it after the village itself, so actually the train company gave the town its name!

The town as we speak has in essence joined with the adjoining Bowness, whilst they continue to be two defined towns with individual centres. The area is awesome for travel and leisure with many sights and museums, with Lake Windermere itself being the key attraction. It has a population of approximately 8,245 and is found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: With depths of up to 219 feet (66 meters), widths about 1 mile and a length of approximately 11.2 miles (18 kilometers), Windermere is England's largest sized freshwater lake.
