Placed in close proximity to and being named after the biggest inland lake in England, the little town of Windermere does not in fact touch the banks of the lake, being roughly one kilometre away, although its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere certainly does.

The very first listed reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late fourteenth century, and appears to be a mix of dialects, with the first portion Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the second portion "mere" derived from the Old English for pool or lake. The town would not however have been referred to as this during those times, just the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadBizarre as it seems, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were mainly accountable for affording the town its name, because it was formerly a settlement named Birthwaite, when the train line arrived at the vicinity in the 1840's, the railway company made a decision to name it after the famous lake and not that of the village itself, and thus it became known as "Windermere".
