Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The modest town of Windermere lays about a half a mile from the edge of England's biggest lake, and from where it gets its name, no portion of it actually touches the shore of the lake, while its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a blend of Old English and Old Swedish, the very first documented reference to it from 1396 as "Wynandermer", the first section of the name is understood to refer to a personal name Vinandr (from Old Swedish), with the 2nd part "mere", that means a pool or lake (Old English). However the town itself did not have that name until the mid-nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town of Windermere as it is at present only began following the arrival of the railway line in the eighteen forties, the original village was called Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the train station after the famous lake and not that of the village. Which means that actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway were responsible for naming the town!

Windermere town and parish in these modern times has a population of about 8,000 and it's found in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria, the modern day town has well-nigh combined with nearby Bowness-on-Windermere, although they are still 2 unique towns having distinct town centres. The region is serious for the travel industry and there are a mixture of museums and visitor attractions, with Lake Windermere by itself appearing top attraction.

Lake Windermere: Fashioned at the time of Ice Age, Lake Windermere stands proud as the largest inland lake in England with a length of over 11 miles (eighteen kilometres) a width of approximately a mile & depths reaching 219 foot (sixty six meters), it is a ribbon lake and it's in Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it's been a popular tourist draw, with over 15 million visitors each year venturing to the Lake District in total.
