Getting its name from England's biggest inland lake, the tiny town of Windermere is round about one kilometer from the edge of the lake, certainly not touching it like its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The 1st reported mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and is considered to be a mixture of tongues, with the first component Old Swedish (from the personal name Vinandr) and the 2nd section "mere" referring to the Old English for pool or lake. The town itself would not however have been termed this during this period, merely the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it appears these days almost entirely started after the arrival of the railway in 1847, the old settlement was called Birthwaite and it took on the name "Windermere" once the railway company named the station after the famous lake instead of the village. So effectively the Kendal and Windermere Railway were the people accountable for giving the town its name!

Found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland District, the town has got a population of roughly 8,245, the location is major for the holiday industry with many visitor attractions and museums, with Lake Windermere by itself being the premier draw. Windermere town has just about become joined with neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, nonetheless they survive as 2 unique towns with separate town centres.
