Windermere is Twinned With: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The small town of Windermere lays around about a half a mile from England's greatest lake, from where the town derives its name, none of the town touches the shores of the lake, while the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere has banks on the lake.

The very first recorded reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in 1396, and is reckoned to be a fusion of tongues, with the 1st part Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the second portion "mere" from the Old English for lake or pool. The town itself would not however have been termed this during those times, simply the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it is nowadays almost entirely evolved right after the coming of the train in the 1840's, the actual settlement was called Birthwaite and it inherited the name "Windermere" when the railway company named the station after the famous lake instead than that of the village. So effectively the Kendal and Windermere Railway were responsible for giving the town its name!

Windermere town and parish these days has a populace of about eight thousand and it is found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria, the present day town has literally combined with neighbouring Bowness, although they are still 2 different towns with independent town centres. The vicinity is serious for tourism and you will find an array of sights and museums, with Lake Windermere by itself remaining leading draw.

Lake Windermere: With depths of up to 219 feet (sixty six meters), widths about a mile & a length of more than 11.2 miles (eighteen kilometres), Lake Windermere is England's largest sized natural lake. Since the 1847 construction of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become an enormous visitor draw, with in excess of 15 million people a year staying in the Lake District National Park as a whole. It is a favorite for yachting, fishing, photography, swimming & backpacking. The lake is a ribbon lake that was made over the last Ice Age, it contains 18 islands altogether the largest named Belle Isle.
