Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Deriving its name from England's largest freshwater lake, the small town of Windermere is close to one kilometre from the edge of the lake, not reaching it as does its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a blend of Old Swedish and Old English, the first reported reference to it in the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the 1st part of the name is thought to be a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), and the following portion "mere", that means a lake or pool (from Old English). However the town did not have this name until centuries later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe former settlement of Birthwaite only started to be "Windermere" in the eighteen forties as a consequence of the coming of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, the company opting to call the station after the lake instead of giving it the name of the village, thus actually the railway company afforded the town its name!

Found in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria, the town has a population of approximately 8,200, the vicinity is colossal for the tourism industry and there are quite a number of sightseeing attractions and museums, with the lake proving main attraction. Windermere town has largely combined with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, though they continue to be two distinct towns with independent centres.

Lake Windermere: Molded during the last Ice Age, Windermere holds the title of the biggest freshwater lake in England it has a length of around 11 miles (18km) a width of around a mile & depths reaching 219 feet (66 meters), it is a ribbon lake & it's in Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven coming of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has become a big visitor draw, with over fifteen million people every year exploring the Lake District National Park as a whole.
