The little town of Windermere is nestled approximately a half a mile from the edge of England's greatest lake, and from which the town gets its name, no section of it actually touches the banks of the lake, though its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere certainly does.

The 1st listed mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and is assumed to be a combination of tongues, with the 1st portion Old Swedish (from the personal name Vinandr) and the 2nd element "mere" being the Old English for pool or lake. The town would not nevertheless have been termed this at that time, merely the lake itself.
