The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Being named after England's biggest freshwater lake, the tiny town of Windermere is about one kilometre away from the edge of the lake, certainly not touching it like the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The 1st written mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and appears to be a mixture of dialects, with the 1st part Old Swedish (Vinandr, a personal name) and the second element "mere" taken from the Old English for pool or lake. The town wouldn't however have been identified as this back then, just the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe established settlement of Birthwaite only became known as "Windermere" in the 1840's as a consequence of the appearance of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the executive preferring to call the railway station after the lake and not naming it after the village itself, therefore effectively the train company afforded the town its identify!

The town and parish today has a population of roughly eight thousand and is set in the Cumbrian South Lakeland District, the town has essentially amalgamated with the neighbouring Bowness, even though they remain as 2 defined towns having independent centres. The vicinity is serious for travel and leisure and there are numerous museums and tourist attractions, with the renowned lake by itself proving chief draw.

Lake Windermere: With a depth of up to 219 foot (sixty six meters), widths about a mile and a length of roughly eleven miles (18km), Lake Windermere is England's greatest natural lake. Since the eighteen forty seven construction of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has been a massive tourism attraction, with more than 15 million visitors every year venturing to the Lake District in total. It's widely used for boating, course fishing, wildlife, water activities & hiking. Windermere is a ribbon lake which was fashioned over the last Ice Age, it's got 18 isles in total the biggest being named Belle Isle.
