Windermere is Twinned With: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Being named after England's greatest lake, the small town of Windermere is around one kilometer away from the the banks of the lake, not coming in contact with it like its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a combination of Old Swedish and Old English, the first listed mention of it being in the late 14th century as "Wynandermer", the very first element of the name is thought to have been a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), and the 2nd portion "mere", that means a pool or lake (from the Old English). Though the town wouldn't use this name until centuries later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe former village of Birthwaite only became known as "Windermere" in 1847 as a consequence of the introduction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, the company favouring to call the railway station after the lake and not naming it after the village itself, therefore essentially the train company gave the town its title!

The town currently has fundamentally amalgamated with the adjoining Bowness-on-Windermere, despite the fact that they are still two unique towns having different centers. The area is serious for tourism with numerous sight-seeing opportunities and museums, with the famed lake itself remaining most significant attraction. It has a population of around 8,245 and is located in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Region.

Lake Windermere: With a depth of up to 219 foot (66 meters), widths up to a mile & a length of roughly 11 miles (eighteen kilometers), Lake Windermere is England's largest inland lake. Since the eighteen forty seven building of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has remained a serious tourism attraction, with more than 15 million tourists per year touring the Lake District Park as a whole. It is widely used for sailing, course angling, photography, swimming and camping. Lake Windermere is a ribbon lake which was shaped in the Ice Age, it features 18 islands altogether the biggest being named Belle Isle.
