The tiny town of Windermere lays around one kilometer from the edge of the biggest lake in England, and from where the town derives its name, no area of this town actually borders the lake, although the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere has banks on the lake.

Whilst not the title of the town itself at this point (just the lake), the earliest reported reference of it appears to be as "Wynandermer" in the late fourteenth century, with a component of it being regarded as from the Old Swedish (Vinandr a personal name), and the 2nd element from the Old English for lake or pool ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadOdd as it sounds, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were mostly responsible for affording the town its name, since it was formerly a village named Birthwaite, after the railway line arrived at the vicinity in the 1840's, the train company made a decision to name it after the lake and not that of the existing village itself, and so it was called "Windermere".

Found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area, the town has a population of around 8,200, the vicinity is great for the travel industry and you can find an array of visitor attractions and museums, with the well-known lake itself remaining principal draw. Windermere town has literally merged with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, even though they are still two unique towns boasting individual centres.

Lake Windermere: Shaped during the last Ice Age, Windermere stands proud as the biggest natural lake in England having a length of roughly 11.2 miles (18km) a width of roughly 1 mile and a depth of up to two hundred and nineteen foot (66 metres), its known as a ribbon lake and is in Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the 1847 coming of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has remained a significant tourist draw, with more than fifteen million visitors per year venturing to the Lake District overall.
