The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Being named after England's largest freshwater lake, the little town of Windermere is about one kilometer from the the banks of the lake, not touching it like its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The first reported reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in 1396, and appears to be a mixture of languages, the 1st element Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the following element "mere" referring to the Old English for pool or lake. The village wouldn't however have been termed this during those times, simply the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it stands nowadays mainly developed after the coming of the railway line in the eighteen forties, the former village was named Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" as soon as the railway company named the station after the lake rather than the village. And so actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for affording the town its name!

The town currently has literally amalgamated with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, despite the fact that they remain as two unique towns boasting distinct centres. The area is vast for travel and leisure and you will find quite a number of interesting attractions and museums, with the well-known lake staying leading attraction. It has a population of approximately 8,000 inhabitants and is found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: Fashioned in the course of Ice Age, Windermere is the largest sized natural lake in England having a length of more than 11 miles (18km) a width of up to a mile and depths of up to 219 feet (66 metres), its known as a ribbon lake and it is in Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the 1847 arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has become a massive tourist attraction, with over fifteen million people a year exploring the Lake District Park as a whole.
