Windermere is Twinned With: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The smallish town of Windermere is located roughly one kilometer from the banks of England's biggest lake, and from where the town derives its name, no area of this town touches the lake, though the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a combination of Old Swedish and Old English, the first recorded reference to it from the late 14th century as "Wynandermer", the 1st component of the name is believed to be a personal name Vinandr (Old Swedish), and the second element "mere", meaning a pool or lake (Old English). Though the village would not use this name until the mid-nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadOdd as it might seem, the Kendal and Windermere Railway were accountable for giving the town its name, given it was earlier a village called Birthwaite, when the train line arrived at the area in the eighteen forties, the train company decided to call it after the lake rather than that of the existing village itself, and as a result it was called "Windermere".

The town and parish in these modern times has a population of approximately 8,245 and it's found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area, the present day town has just about become combined with nearby Bowness, even if they are still two different towns boasting individual centers. The area is awesome for the travel industry with a mixture of sightseeing attractions and museums, with the lake itself proving primary draw.

Lake Windermere: With depths of up to 219 foot (sixty six m), widths about 1 mile & a length of roughly 11.2 miles (18km), Windermere is England's biggest freshwater lake. Since the eighteen forty seven construction of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a tremendous tourism attraction, with over 15 million tourists each year exploring the Lake District as a whole. It's a favorite for yachting, fishing, wildlife, water sports & trekking. Windermere is a ribbon lake that was moulded throughout the last Ice Age, it boasts 18 isles altogether the largest known as Belle Isle.
