The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Situated close to and deriving its name from the largest freshwater lake in England, the little town of Windermere doesn't literally touch the edge of the lake, being approximately one kilometre away, whilst its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

While not the name of the village in those far off days (just the lake), the earliest documented mention of it was in fact as "Wynandermer" in the late fourteenth century, with one component of it being thought to be from the Old Swedish (a persons name Vinandr), and the second element deriving from the Old English for pool or lake ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadStrange as it seems, the Kendal and Windermere Railway were accountable for giving the town its name, as it was previously a settlement named Birthwaite, at the time the train line arrived in the vicinity in in eighteen forty seven, the train company made a decision to name it after the legendary lake and not the village itself, and therefore it was called "Windermere".

The town these days has largely merged with adjoining Bowness, whilst they survive as two different towns with independent centres. The area is awesome for the travel industry and you will find a range of museums and attractions, with Lake Windermere appearing principal draw. It has a populace of roughly 8,000 and is located in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area.

Lake Windermere: Shaped throughout the last Ice Age, Windermere holds the title of the largest sized freshwater lake in England with a length of more than 11 miles (eighteen kilometres) a width of roughly a mile & a depth of up to two hundred and nineteen foot (66 metres), it is a ribbon lake & it is in Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the eighteen forty seven arrival of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a popular tourism magnet, with more than fifteen million people per year staying in the Lake District Park in total.
