Getting its name from England's greatest inland lake, the little town of Windermere is approximately half a mile from the the banks of the lake, certainly not coming in contact with it like its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a combination of Old Swedish and Old English, the earliest recorded mention of it in the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the 1st component of the name is believed to have been a personal name Vinandr (from Old Swedish), with the next part "mere", signifying a pool or lake (from the Old English). However the town wouldn't have that name until the mid-nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadStrange as it seems, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were mostly responsible for naming the town, given it was earlier a village named Birthwaite, after the railway found its way to the location in the 1840's, the railway company decided to name it after the well known lake instead of the existing village itself, and as a result it became known as "Windermere".

The town and parish today has a population of around 8,000 inhabitants and it's situated in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area, the town today has virtually combined with neighbouring Bowness, even though they continue to be two defined towns with independent centers. The location is colossal for the travel industry and there are a range of attractions and museums, with the famed lake itself appearing most significant attraction.

Lake Windermere: With depths reaching 219 foot (sixty six metres), widths nearly one mile and a length of over 11 miles (eighteen km's), Lake Windermere is England's largest natural lake.
