Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The tiny town of Windermere is located around one kilometre from England's biggest lake, and from which it derives its name, none of the town touches the banks of the lake, though the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere certainly does.

Although not the title of the village in those days (merely the lake), the 1st reported reference of it was initially as "Wynandermer" in the late 14th century, with a part of it being viewed as as being from the Old Swedish (Vinandr a personal name), and the 2nd component derived from the Old English for lake or pool ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadPeculiar as it might sound, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for naming the town, as it was earlier a settlement called Birthwaite, at the time the railway line found its way to the vicinity in the 1840's, the railway company decided to call it after the well known lake rather than that of the existing village itself, and subsequently it was called "Windermere".

The town presently has well-nigh joined with adjoining Bowness, whilst they continue to be two different towns having independent centers. The region is major for tourism and you can find quite a number of museums and points of interest, with Lake Windermere itself proving biggest draw. It has a population of approximately 8,300 and is found in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: Created in the Ice Age, Windermere stands proud as the biggest natural lake in England it has a length of roughly eleven miles (18 km's) a width of about a mile & depths of up to 219 foot (sixty six metres), it's a ribbon lake & is inside Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the eighteen forty seven construction of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a popular tourist magnet, with over fifteen million visitors every year traveling to the Lake District Park as a whole.
