The smallish town of Windermere is round about one kilometre from the edge of England's greatest lake, and from which the town derives its name, no segment of it actually borders the banks of the lake, whilst its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere has banks on the lake.

The earliest reported reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in 1396, and is considered to be a mix of dialects, with the first component Old Swedish (from the personal name Vinandr) and the second section "mere" referring to the Old English for lake or pool. The village wouldn't however have been called this at that time, simply the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it is today mainly developed after the introduction of the train in the eighteen forties, the original settlement was known as Birthwaite and it inherited the name "Windermere" when the railway company named the railway station after the famous lake instead of the village. Therefore effectively the Kendal and Windermere Railway were responsible for naming the town!

Situated in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria, the town has a populace of around 8,000 residents, the vicinity is awesome for tourism and you can find numerous museums and sights, with the lake being the chief draw. Windermere town has practically joined with the adjoining Bowness, even though they survive as 2 distinct towns boasting different centers.
