Deriving its name from England's biggest freshwater lake, the tiny town of Windermere is approximately one kilometre distance from the edge of the lake, certainly not coming in contact with it like its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The earliest written reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and is believed to be a combination of dialects, the 1st element Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the 2nd component "mere" from the Old English for pool or lake. The town wouldn't however have been identified as this in those far off days, just the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town as it stands at present almost entirely began right after the arrival of the railway in 1847, the existing settlement was called Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the railway station after the lake instead of the village. Which means that essentially the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were the people answerable for naming the town!
