Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Being named after England's greatest inland lake, the tiny town of Windermere is approximately half a mile away from the edge of the lake, not coming in contact with it as does the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The 1st listed mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late fourteenth century, and appears to be a mix of languages, the 1st portion Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the 2nd part "mere" derived from the Old English for lake or pool. The town itself would not however have been identified as this during this period, only the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadPeculiar as it sounds, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were mostly accountable for naming the town, since it was formerly a village known as Birthwaite, after the train service arrived at the location in the eighteen forties, the company decided to call it after the well known lake as opposed to the village itself, and for that reason it became "Windermere".

The town in these modern times has well-nigh become merged with nearby Bowness, even though they are still two defined towns having individual centres. The area is immense for the tourism industry with various attractions and museums, with the renowned lake proving premier draw. It has got a population of roughly 8,200 and is found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: With depths reaching two hundred and nineteen feet (66 m), widths up to 1 mile & a length of approximately 11.2 miles (18km), Lake Windermere is England's largest sized inland lake. Since the 1847 building of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a significant tourist magnet, with in excess of 15 million people each year visiting the Lake District Park as a whole. It is popular for boat trips, freshwater fishing, wildlife, swimming and walking. The lake is a ribbon lake that was created in the Ice Age, it encompasses eighteen isles in total the biggest being named Belle Isle.
