Located in close proximity to and getting its name from the largest lake in England, the town of Windermere does not literally touch the lake, as it is approximately one kilometre away, whereas its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere certainly does.

The name "Windermere" is assumed to be a fusion of Old Swedish and Old English, the very first reported mention of it being in the late 14th century as "Wynandermer", the very first element of the name is assumed to refer to a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), with the next element "mere", meaning a pool or lake (from the Old English).
