Windermere is Twinned With: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Placed near to and being named after the biggest freshwater lake in England, the town of Windermere does not actually touch the edge of the lake, as it is about one kilometre away, whereas its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere indeed does.

The name "Windermere" is apparently a blend of Old English and Old Swedish, the earliest written mention of it in the late 14th century as "Wynandermer", the first section of the name is considered to refer to a personal name Vinandr (from Old Swedish), and the next component "mere", which means a pool or lake (Old English). Though the town itself wouldn't use that name until centuries later.

Windermere - Main RoadFunny as it will seem, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were mostly accountable for naming the town, given it was formerly a settlement called Birthwaite, after the train line came to this place in 1847, the railway company decided they would call it after the lake and not the existing village itself, and for that reason it became known as "Windermere".

The town presently has almost amalgamated with neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, even though they remain as two distinct towns having different centers. The region is serious for the holiday industry with a mixture of museums and visitor attractions, with the celebrated lake proving leading draw. It has got a population of roughly 8,245 and it's located in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: Made during the last Ice Age, Windermere stands proud as the greatest natural lake in England with a length of more than eleven mls (eighteen km's) a width of close to 1 mile and depths reaching 219 foot (66 meters), it's a ribbon lake and it is in Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the eighteen forty seven construction of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has been a significant tourism attraction, with in excess of fifteen million tourists per year staying in the Lake District Park as a whole.
