Windermere is Twinned With: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The modest town of Windermere is situated about one kilometre from the banks of England's biggest lake, and from which it derives its name, no section of it actually touches the shores of the lake, though its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The earliest reported reference of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late fourteenth century, and is reputedly a blend of languages, with the 1st part Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the 2nd component "mere" deriving from the Old English for lake or pool. The town itself would not however have been named this at this point, simply the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadStrange as it seems, the Kendal and Windermere Railway were largely accountable for naming the town, since it was formerly a village called Birthwaite, at the time the railway line found its way to the location in 1847, the train company decided they would call it after the lake and not that of the village itself, and for that reason it became known as "Windermere".

The town and parish at present has a population of around 8,200 and it's located in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, the town today has largely combined with the nearby Bowness, even if they continue to be two unique towns with independent town centres. The location is awesome for the tourism industry with quite a number of museums and sights, with the lake itself continuing to be largest attraction.

Lake Windermere: With a depth of up to 219 foot (66 meters), widths roughly a mile and a length of over eleven miles (18 kilometers), Windermere is England's largest sized inland lake.
