Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Getting its name from England's biggest lake, the little town of Windermere is close to half a mile away from the the banks of the lake, not touching it like its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The name "Windermere" is apparently a blend of Old English and Old Swedish, the 1st documented reference to it being in the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the first bit of the name is understood to be a personal name Vinandr (from Old Swedish), and the following part "mere", which means a pool or lake (from Old English). Even though the town itself didn't have this name until the nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadPeculiar as it sounds, the Kendal and Windermere Railway were largely responsible for affording the town its name, since it was earlier a settlement named Birthwaite, when the train line came to the vicinity in the 1840's, the train company decided to name it after the well known lake and not that of the existing village itself, and thus it was called "Windermere".

The town at present has just about combined with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, nevertheless they survive as 2 defined towns with their own town centres. The location is immense for the travel industry with several museums and sights, with the famed lake being the key draw. It has a populace of around 8,245 and it's found in the South Lakeland Region of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: Shaped over the last Ice Age, Lake Windermere is the largest sized inland lake in England having a length of around eleven miles (eighteen kilometers) a width of close to one mile and depths of up to 219 foot (sixty six m), it's a ribbon lake & is inside Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven building of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has been a massive tourist attraction, with in excess of fifteen million visitors every year venturing to the Lake District Park in total.
