Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The small town of Windermere is nestled approximately one kilometre from the largest lake in England, from where the town derives its name, none of it touches the banks of the lake, though the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere has banks on the lake.

Although not the title of the town during this period (merely the lake), the 1st reported mention of it looks to be as "Wynandermer" in the late 14th century, with one element of it being thought to be from the Old Swedish (a persons name Vinandr), and the following portion taken from the Old English for lake or pool ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadThe town of Windermere as it appears at present almost entirely started subsequent to the introduction of the railway line in 1847, the early settlement was known as Birthwaite and it took on the name "Windermere" when the railway company named the station after the lake and not the village. Hence essentially the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for giving the town its name!

The town presently has just about joined with the nearby Bowness, whilst they survive as two defined towns boasting individual town centres. The area is fantastic for leisure and travel and there are a mixture of interesting attractions and museums, with the celebrated lake itself appearing primary attraction. It has got a population of around 8,000 inhabitants and it is located in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area.

Lake Windermere: Made during the last Ice Age, Windermere stands proud as the greatest inland lake in England having a length of over 11.2 miles (18km) a width of approximately 1 mile & a depth of up to 219 feet (66 metres), it is a ribbon lake & it is within Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven arrival of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become an enormous tourism attraction, with in excess of 15 million tourists every year visiting the Lake District Park overall.
