The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Lying in close proximity to and being named after the greatest freshwater lake in England, the town of Windermere does not in fact border the lake, as it is roughly one kilometer away, although the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere indeed does.

Whilst not the title of the town itself back then (just the lake), the 1st documented reference of it was in fact as "Wynandermer" in the late 14th century, with a bit of the name being thought to be from the Old Swedish (the personal name Vinandr), and the second element derived from the Old English for pool or lake ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it stands these days mainly started subsequent to the appearance of the train line in the 1840's, the old settlement was called Birthwaite and it acquired the name "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the train station after the famous lake as opposed to the village. And so actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway were answerable for naming the town!

The town today has in essence become amalgamated with adjoining Bowness, whilst they continue to be 2 unique towns with their own town centres. The location is fantastic for travel and leisure and you will find various places of interest and museums, with the lake staying most popular attraction. It has got a population of around eight thousand and it is found in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Area.

Lake Windermere: With a depth of up to 219 foot (sixty six meters), widths nearly one mile and a length of over eleven miles (eighteen kilometers), Windermere is England's biggest freshwater lake. Since the 1847 coming of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has become a popular visitor draw, with more than 15 million visitors per year exploring the Lake District Park as a whole. It's well known for sailing, course angling, birdwatching, water activities & backpacking. Lake Windermere is a ribbon lake which was shaped at the time of Ice Age, it has 18 isles in total the largest sized being known as Belle Isle.
