The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Being named after England's greatest freshwater lake, the small town of Windermere is around one kilometer distance from the the banks of the lake, not touching it like its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

While not the name of the village in those days (just the lake), the earliest reported reference of it was as "Wynandermer" in 1396, with a component of it being regarded as from the Old Swedish (Vinandr a personal name), and the following part derived from the Old English for lake or pool ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadThe former settlement of Birthwaite only grew to be "Windermere" in the 1840's after the appearance of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the executive preferring to name the railway station after the lake and not giving it the name of the village itself, thus essentially the train company afforded the town its identify!

Found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria, the town has a populace of about eight thousand, the location is serious for the travel industry with various museums and sightseeing attractions, with the renowned lake itself appearing most popular attraction. Windermere town has more or less combined with the nearby Bowness, although they survive as two defined towns boasting their own centres.

Lake Windermere: Created at the time of Ice Age, Lake Windermere holds the title of the biggest inland lake in England with a length of more than 11.2 miles (eighteen kilometers) a width of approximately a mile and depths reaching two hundred and nineteen feet (sixty six meters), it is a ribbon lake and it is in Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the 1847 coming of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a tremendous visitor attraction, with over fifteen million tourists per year touring the Lake District Park overall.
