Nestled very near to and being named after the greatest lake in England, the little town of Windermere does not literally touch the lake, being about one kilometre away, while its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a fusion of Old Swedish and Old English, the very first recorded mention of it being in 1396 as "Wynandermer", the first part of the name is understood to have been a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), with the 2nd component "mere", signifying a lake or pool (from the Old English). Even though the town did not have this name until centuries later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe pre-existing village of Birthwaite only became "Windermere" in the 1840's with the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the company choosing to call the railway station after the renowned lake and not giving it the name of the village, thus essentially the train company gave the town its name!

Located in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria, the town has got a populace of around 8,200, the vicinity is great for travel and leisure and you will find an array of museums and visitor attractions, with the famed lake by itself proving most important attraction. Windermere town has in essence become combined with adjoining Bowness-on-Windermere, whilst they survive as 2 distinct towns with different centres.

Lake Windermere: With depths of up to two hundred & nineteen foot (sixty six meters), widths roughly 1 mile & a length of approximately eleven miles (eighteen km's), Lake Windermere is England's largest freshwater lake. It's favoured for boat trips, course angling, wildlife, water activities and hiking. Windermere is a ribbon lake that was fashioned during the last Ice Age, it's got 18 isles in total the largest sized being called Belle Isle.
