The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The smallish town of Windermere is set approximately a half a mile from the banks of England's largest lake, from where the town got its name, no part of this town touches the shores of the lake, however its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" looks to be a blend of Old Swedish and Old English, the 1st listed mention of it in 1396 as "Wynandermer", the 1st element of the name is understood to have been a personal name Vinandr (Old Swedish), and the next element "mere", signifying a lake or pool (from the Old English). Though the town itself did not go under that name until centuries later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town of Windermere as it is nowadays almost entirely started subsequent to the arriving of the train line in in eighteen forty seven, the early village was known as Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" as soon as the railway company named the train station after the lake rather than the village. Which means that actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for naming the town!

Found in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, the town has a population of around 8,000 residents, The region is vast for leisure and travel with quite a number of museums and places of interest, with the renowned lake by itself appearing most important draw. Windermere town has well-nigh combined with the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere, despite the fact that they are still 2 unique towns having individual centres.

Lake Windermere: With depths of up to 219 foot (sixty six meters), widths nearly 1 mile & a length of around eleven miles (eighteen kilometers), Lake Windermere is England's largest inland lake. Since the eighteen forty seven arrival of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a major visitor magnet, with more than 15 million people a year heading to the Lake District in total. It's favoured for sailing, course fishing, photography, swimming & walking. Windermere is a ribbon lake that was molded during the last Ice Age, it boasts eighteen islands in total the biggest known as Belle Isle.
