The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Lying very close to and being named after the largest inland lake in England, the town of Windermere does not literally touch the lake, as it is roughly one kilometer away, whilst its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere actually does.

The earliest written mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and appears to be a fusion of languages, with the 1st section Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the 2nd element "mere" referring to the Old English for pool or lake. The town itself would not however have been known as this at this point, just the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it stands these days almost entirely started since the introduction of the railway in the eighteen forties, the former village was named Birthwaite and it modified its name to "Windermere" subsequent to the railway company named the train station after the lake rather than that of the village. Thus effectively the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for naming the town!

The town and parish at present has got a population of roughly 8,000 and it's set in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, the modern town has largely become combined with neighbouring Bowness, however they remain as 2 different towns boasting their own town centres. The location is colossal for leisure and travel and you will find a range of tourist attractions and museums, with the well-known lake by itself being the largest draw.

Lake Windermere: Created during the last Ice Age, Lake Windermere holds the title of the largest sized natural lake in England with a length of roughly 11.2 mls (eighteen km's) a width of about 1 mile & a depth of up to 219 foot (66 metres), its in the formation of a ribbon lake and it's within Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the 1847 building of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a serious tourist magnet, with over fifteen million people a year visiting the Lake District National Park in total.
