The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The modest town of Windermere lies about one kilometre from the banks of England's greatest lake, and from where it derives its name, no part of it touches the banks of the lake, though the neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" appears to be a combination of Old English and Old Swedish, the very first listed reference to it in the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the first section of the name is considered to be a personal name Vinandr (from the Old Swedish), and the next part "mere", which means a pool or lake (from Old English). Although the town didn't have that name until much later.

Windermere - Main RoadThe town of Windermere as it is nowadays mainly started subsequent to the coming of the railway line in the eighteen forties, the original village was called Birthwaite and it inherited the name "Windermere" subsequent to the railway company named the station after the lake as opposed to the village. Hence actually the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for giving the town its name!

Found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria, the town has got a population of about 8,000, the area is enormous for the travel industry and there are an array of points of interest and museums, with the lake by itself being the leading draw. Windermere town has literally amalgamated with adjoining Bowness-on-Windermere, though they survive as 2 different towns having separate town centres.

Lake Windermere: Created during the last Ice Age, Lake Windermere holds the title of the largest sized natural lake in England having a length of roughly 11 miles (eighteen km's) a width of about one mile and a depth of up to 219 foot (sixty six metres), its known as a ribbon lake and it is within Cumbria's Lake District Park. Since the 1847 building of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has become a tremendous tourist draw, with over fifteen million visitors a year touring the Lake District National Park overall.
