The Twin Town for Windermere is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

The little town of Windermere is perched around one kilometer from the banks of England's largest lake, and from which it gets its name, none of it actually contacts the shores of the lake, though its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The name "Windermere" looks to be a combination of Old Swedish and Old English, the first reported reference to it from the late fourteenth century as "Wynandermer", the 1st component of the name is considered to refer to a personal name Vinandr (Old Swedish), and the second section "mere", signifying a lake or pool (Old English). However the town itself did not have this name until the nineteenth century.

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it stands nowadays only grew up since the arriving of the railway in the 1840's, the early settlement was known as Birthwaite and it acquired the name "Windermere" after the railway company named the station after the famous lake and not that of the village. Hence essentially the Kendal and Windermere Railway were answerable for giving the town its name!

The town and parish these days has got a population of roughly 8,245 and is found in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria, the modern day town has practically joined with nearby Bowness-on-Windermere, despite the fact that they survive as 2 different towns boasting separate centres. The region is major for the holiday industry and there are several museums and sightseeing attractions, with the lake itself being the greatest attraction.

Lake Windermere: With depths reaching two hundred & nineteen feet (66 metres), widths roughly a mile & a length of around eleven miles (eighteen km's), Windermere is England's largest freshwater lake. Since the 1847 building of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it's been an enormous tourist attraction, with over fifteen million visitors each year venturing to the Lake District as a whole. It is well known for yachting, course angling, birdwatching, water activities & backpacking. Lake Windermere is a ribbon lake that was created during the last Ice Age, it contains eighteen isles altogether the biggest known as Belle Isle.
