Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Established very close to and being named after the greatest inland lake in England, the small town of Windermere doesn't actually touch the lake, as it is about a half a mile away, however its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere indeed does.

Although not the name of the town in those far off days (simply the lake), the 1st reported reference of it was initially as "Wynandermer" in the late fourteenth century, with a component of the name being considered as being from the Old Swedish (the personal name Vinandr), and the 2nd part from the Old English for lake or pool ("mere").

Windermere - Main RoadWindermere as it stands today mainly developed since the appearance of the train in the 1840's, the actual village was known as Birthwaite and it changed names to "Windermere" soon after the railway company named the train station after the famous lake rather than the village. Which means that essentially the Kendal and Windermere Railway were the people responsible for affording the town its name!

The town today has literally merged with the nearby Bowness, despite the fact that they continue to be 2 defined towns having their own centers. The vicinity is enormous for travel and leisure and you will find quite a number of tourist attractions and museums, with the lake appearing primary draw. It has got a population of about 8,300 and is located in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Region.

Lake Windermere: With depths of up to 219 foot (66 meters), widths about one mile & a length of approximately 11 miles (18 km's), Windermere is England's largest inland lake. Since the eighteen forty seven construction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it's been a massive tourism magnet, with in excess of fifteen million tourists every year venturing to the Lake District National Park in total. It's a favorite for yachting, course angling, birdwatching, water activities and camping. Lake Windermere is a ribbon lake that was made during the last Ice Age, it's got eighteen isles in total the greatest known as Belle Isle.
