Windermere's Twin Town is: Diessen am Ammersee (Southern Bavaria, Germany)

Deriving its name from England's greatest lake, the tiny town of Windermere is around one kilometer from the lake's edge, certainly not coming in contact with it as does its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere.

The first written mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in 1396, and is apparently a mix of tongues, the 1st section Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the 2nd portion "mere" being the Old English for lake or pool. The village would not however have been named this back then, simply the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadUnusual as it seems, the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company were accountable for naming the town, because it was formerly a village known as Birthwaite, after the railway arrived in the vicinity in the 1840's, the company decided they would call it after the well known lake instead of the existing village itself, and as a result it became known as "Windermere".

The town at present has practically become merged with neighbouring Bowness, though they are still two distinct towns boasting separate centres. The location is enormous for the tourism industry and you can find a range of interesting attractions and museums, with the lake itself staying largest attraction. It has got a population of approximately 8,000 and it is set in the Cumbrian South Lakeland Region.

Lake Windermere: With depths reaching 219 foot (66 meters), widths nearly one mile and a length of more than eleven miles (18km), Windermere is England's biggest natural lake. Since the eighteen forty seven construction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, it has been a significant tourist attraction, with more than 15 million visitors per year visiting the Lake District as a whole. It is favoured for yachting, angling, birdwatching, water sports and hiking. Lake Windermere is a ribbon lake which was moulded over the last Ice Age, it boasts eighteen isles in total the biggest being called Belle Isle.
