The little town of Windermere is located around about one kilometer from the edge of the largest lake in England, from which the town derives its name, no part of it touches the banks of the lake, though its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere does.

The first recorded mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in the late 14th century, and appears to be a blend of dialects, the first section Old Swedish (Vinandr, a personal name) and the 2nd element "mere" coming from the Old English for lake or pool. The village wouldn't however have been known as this during this period, simply the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe former village of Birthwaite only started to be "Windermere" in the eighteen forties after the introduction of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the owners opting to name the train station after the famous lake as opposed to giving it the name of the village, and so effectively the train company gave the town its name!

Found in the South Lakeland Area of Cumbria, the town has a population of around 8,200, the location is colossal for leisure and travel and there are many museums and points of interest, with Lake Windermere staying most popular attraction. Windermere town has largely become merged with the nearby Bowness, nevertheless they survive as 2 different towns boasting individual centers.

Lake Windermere: Created throughout the last Ice Age, Windermere holds the title of the biggest inland lake in England having a length of around 11 mls (18km) a width of nearly a mile & depths of up to two hundred & nineteen foot (sixty six m), it is a ribbon lake & it is inside Cumbria's Lake District National Park. From the time of the eighteen forty seven arrival of the Kendal & Windermere Railway, it has remained a tremendous tourism draw, with more than fifteen million visitors a year heading to the Lake District Park in total.
