Getting its name from England's greatest freshwater lake, the little town of Windermere is close to one kilometre distance from the edge of the lake, certainly not touching it as does its neighbouring Bowness-on-Windermere.

The earliest reported mention of the name ("Wynandermer") was in 1396, and appears to be a mixture of tongues, with the 1st part Old Swedish (Vinandr a persons name) and the following section "mere" from the Old English for pool or lake. The town would not however have been termed this at that time, merely the lake itself.

Windermere - Main RoadThe original village of Birthwaite only evolved into "Windermere" in the eighteen forties with the appearance of the Kendal and Windermere Railway Company, the owners deciding to name the railway station after the lake instead of naming it after the village, hence essentially the railway company afforded the town its title!

The town presently has more or less become merged with the nearby Bowness, even if they continue to be 2 different towns with separate town centres. The region is huge for tourism and you can find a variety of museums and places of interest, with the celebrated lake itself remaining top draw. It has got a populace of around 8,000 and it is located in the South Lakeland District of Cumbria.

Lake Windermere: Created at the time of Ice Age, Lake Windermere is the largest sized natural lake in England having a length of approximately eleven miles (18km) a width of up to one mile and depths of up to two hundred and nineteen foot (66 meters), it is a ribbon lake & it is inside of Cumbria's Lake District Park.
